Job Summary

The Protype Technician primary function is to build prototype components, systems and products to support innovation, research and development and product development

Duties and Responsibilities

•    Work with design engineers to assess manufacturability of prototypes, make decisions about appropriate manufacturing techniques for prototypes and production, suggest changes in design to facilitate rapid and low cost manufacture of prototype and production parts.
•    Build tooling required to manufacture prototypes that cannot be made on standard machines.
•    Fabricate mechanical components of proposed new products, new system s or new components for test and evaluation using full range of available equipment.
•    Maintain a work order system or tracking work requests, work completion and work backlog.
•    Continually assess operating condition of prototype equipment and recommend appropriate maintenance and upgrades.  Carry out as much first level maintenance on specialized equipment as possible.
•    Explore and develop expanded capabilities for prototyping function as required to support business needs.
•    Manage assigned temporary or permanent team member to assist in prototype fabrication.
•    Source and assist in training of other team members to operate some pieces of specialized CNC equipment to provide back up and surge support.
•    Other duties as deemed necessary.

Qualification Requirements

Minimum Education:    •    High school diploma or equivalent required

Minimum Work Experience:    

•    One (1) year experience programming CNC equipment from CAD data and using manual input required including CNC controlled turret punch press, press brake, mill and wire EDM machinery.
•    Five (5) years’ experience in operating shop equipment such as manual lathes, mill, shear, and press brake required.

License(s) / Certification(s):    •    N/a

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

•    Demonstrate proficiency in welding of steel and aluminum required.
•    Experience using precision manual measuring equipment to verify accuracy of parts made.
•    Thorough knowledge of shop mathematics including geometry and trigonometry.
•    Basic familiarity with industrial and commercial electrical equipment required.
•    One (1) year experience in precision fabrication using milling, grinding and EDM machining desirable.
•    Working knowledge of AutoCAD, normal engineering drawing practice, and Microsoft Work/Excel.
•    Ability to work in a constant state of alertness.
•    Ability to work cooperatively with co-workers.
•    Ability to have regular and predictable attendance.
